On Knots and Twine delves into entanglement – whether physical, such as cables becoming hopelessly twisted, or metaphorical, when life’s obstacles seem to accumulate faster than they can be resolved – and explores how embracing disorder can be a source of beauty and transformation. While composing, I initially found myself overwhelmed by the vast palette of colors offered by the chamber winds ensemble.  Unsure of where to begin, I returned to a simple idea that has often helped me through difficult moments: to make something beautiful, you first have to make a mess.  

Throughout the work, mysterious, hazy lines twist and intertwine, gradually knotting together into tangled textures before releasing in bursts of restless energy.  Rather than resisting disorder, the music embraces it, allowing moments of uncertainty and friction to become opportunities for transformation. 

The title refers to the process of making rope, in which individual strands of fiber are twisted and twined together to create something remarkably strong.  Like the process itself, the piece embraces entanglement as the means through which resilience, strength, and beauty can emerge.
