Program Notes

Eucalyptus morrisbyi, commonly called Morrisby’s Gum, is a type of tree from Tasmania that grows in harsh, fiery conditions. Burning wildfires trigger the release of the tree’s seeds for regeneration. The concept of growing out of chaos and turmoil – or fire – is the main idea of this string quartet. Out of an energetic and propulsive texture, a melody emerges. Fragments of the melody rise from the turmoil, twist, and turn, and evolve into their full form as the piece reaches its peak.
