Unsynced (2017) - for Three Clarinets and Bass Clarinet

Written for Martin Andrada, Richard Craig, Isabella Millman, and Jordan Raabe

Duration: ca. 8 1/2 minutes

Unsynced is a result of the fascination towards rhythm that I acquired during the fall of 2017. Upon deeply studying compositional methods and approaches used in the 20th century, I came to love a great deal of the rhythmic techniques used by Béla Bartók and Elliot Carter. These included the use of unusual meters, mixed meters, polymeters, polytempo, and rhythmic canons. Naturally, I was ecstatic to write a piece focusing on rhythm and meter; luckily a group of close friends had asked me to write them a clarinet quartet, the perfect ensemble for such a task. My main focus was on the use of polymeter. Throughout a lot of the piece, the ensemble is split into two groups disagreeing with each other and not quite lining up. The piece revolves around their attempts to come together and be 100% in sync. Unsynced was premiered on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston by Martin Andrada, Richard Craig, Isabella Millman, and Jordan Raabe.
